Like many stories of people of color, yes, lots of heartbreak, lots of suspenseful moments. The Director does a wonderful job displaying since attention to detail with regard to the life that existed during the time period. And during the dangerous circumstances that surrounding the slave trade in West Africa.  The controversy is that black people also enslaved black people.  You can say that about all races. My friend Edwin educated me when I complained about same race violence.  He said there is always a groups within the group that is oppresse. The stronger group become the oppressors forming a heirarchy that positions the weaker group at the bottom. Hollywood movies always takes liberties.  Look at westerns. Braveheart, Beautiful mind the list is long.
